Chronology
When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with presiding over one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events – the election of a new pope – he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundations of the Catholic Church. Many of the actions of Cardinal Lawrence and the other cardinals during the conclave process in the film are consistent with Catholic faith and centuries-old tradition. The Vatican actually officially declares the throne of the Holy See (the governing body of the Catholic Church) vacant. The papal apartment is actually sealed with a crimson ribbon and sealed with the papal wax seal. The College of Cardinals is actually housed in apartments (in real life, they are called the Domus Sanctae Marthae, or House of Saint Martha) to eat and sleep between votes.

And finally, the windows and doors of the Sistine Chapel, where the elections take place and the votes are cast, are actually blacked out, closed, and locked to preserve the secrecy of the conclave. The Roman Catholic Church has had three African popes: Victor I (189–199), Miltiades (also known as Melchiades, 311–314), and Gelasius I (492). Conclave is a great movie that will keep you on edge. Edward Berger’s vision is perfectly executed in almost every way. Ralph Fiennes delivers an Oscar-worthy performance as he is incredible as Cardinal Lawrence. When he gives his speech and says, “There is one sin I have learned to fear more than any other: confidence. If there were only confidence and no doubt, there would be no secrets.
It’s simply brilliant
And so no faith is needed…” Absolutely chilling. The script and dialogue are intelligent and well-crafted, but they are also enhanced by great acting throughout the film. Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Sergio Castellitto, and Isabella Rossellini were excellent in their roles. This film is expected to be nominated for several Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Score, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Cinematography, and more. The music is perfect, as it perfectly captures every defining moment as the drama unfolds.
Go see it!
The plot is gripping, the pacing is solid, and the characters are all interesting in their own way.
