Chronology

Paddington returns to Peru to visit his beloved Aunt Lucy, who is now residing at the Home for Retired Bears. With the Brown family in tow, an exciting adventure ensues when a mystery plunges them into an unexpected journey. The director of the previous two films, Paul King, has decided not to direct this installment.

It follows Paddington (2014)

With “Paddington” now happily ensconced with the “Brown” family, and replete with his own British passport, everything is going swimmingly until he receives a letter from far away Peru. The Mother Superior of the bear retirement home (Olivia Colman) is worried that “Aunt Lucy” is losing her way a little. Aware that they are gradually drifting apart, Mum “Mary” (Emily Mortimer) decides that what they all need is the thrill of a trip, so off they go into the jungle.

It’s there that they meet “Captain Cabot” (Antonio Banderas), who runs a local riverboat with his daughter “Gina” (Cala Tous), and who agrees to take them on his cruise

They arrive at their destination only to find that the elderly bear has gone missing and soon find themselves embroiled in some mischievous machinations that could lead them on a dangerous journey to the famous El Dorado. The problem is, of course, that with a legendary treasure to be found, “Paddington” isn’t quite sure who he can trust as the trail takes him deeper and deeper into the wild. It’s a fun adventure, but it’s a little slow, the humor isn’t as plentiful and the plot is a little derivative, with little bear and too much of “Jungle Cruise” (2021) meets “The Sound of Music” (1965) . . . . .

Stick around for the credits – there’s a nice little cameo from you-know-who

I think Banderas and Colman went a little overboard and there wasn’t the comfort of family getaways either, with far fewer opportunities for Dame Julie Walters to be actively involved. The narrative is a bit disjointed without the charm of the previous two films featuring the Michael Bond character. It’s still a watchable and enjoyable family film, but I’m not sure I’ll remember it for long.
