Zoo Tycoon 2 has several game modes, each of which has different restrictions, with the exception of Freeform. The Freeform game in Zoo Tycoon 2 allows the player to choose which zoo to create, the only limitations being space, animals and objects. The player’s money supply is unlimited, and all items are available from the very beginning of the game, except for those that can only be unlocked in Scenario and Challenge games. Freeform games start with an empty zoo, to which the player adds animal exhibits and guest facilities such as restaurants and bathrooms. The player also has to hire employees to service and maintain facilities. The player selects a plot of land to build a zoo at the beginning of a new Freeform game, and each plot of land represents a second biome (biomes: alpine, benthic, boreal, coastal, desert, grassland, pelagic, reef, savanna, scrub, temperate forest, tropical forest , tundra and wetlands). Each plot of land also has a different size (large, small or medium).
